Cal Poly Athletics

Men’s Soccer Social Media Manager | April 2022 – June 2023

  • Overhauled social strategy for NCAA Division 1 team which led to growth in engagement of 207% for Instagram and 55.5% for Facebook in one year

  • Ideated, produced, and captured live training and game content, including most successful Instagram Reel in account history with 155K+ views and 8K+ likes

  • Analyzed Meta Business Suite insights and social trends to drive content creation, which ultimately grew Instagram follower count by 200% in one year

  • Created visual templates in Photoshop and Illustrator (birthdays, game days, player takeovers) to establish consistency across social channels

  • Worked cross-functionally with other Division 1 sports teams and designed social/website assets under the lead of the Assistant Director of Athletics Marketing

For athlete birthday posts, I decided against using the standard Athletics Marketing template, so I created my own in Photoshop. The first step was to mask out the player. Here is the before and after masking for a Spring 2022 post. Even though the design altered the next season, the same masking technique was utilized to create cutouts. The cutout player was then placed into the design, as seen below.

Below is the evolution of the design template. It began with action shots, full color, black and white, and finally partial color. I liked the action photos because it looked like the player was bursting out of the background but not everyone had these. The most recent design includes mustangs in the background to represent the mascot. Each iteration has Cal Poly’s official green and gold colors.

Below are examples of content I created using Photoshop and Illustrator. The “Match Day” and “NLI Signing Day” posts were crafted using Athletics Marketing templates. I also designed Instagram Story highlight covers to preserve stories such as “Practice,” “Takeovers,” and the famous “Blue-Green” rivalry between Cal Poly and UC Santa Barbara.

In addition to photographing training and the Starting XI with my iPhone, one of my greatest successes as the Social Media Manager was elevating community engagement through the creation of Instagram Reels. Not only did I have a blast making them, but the players had fun too. Below are a few of my favorites, including the “What’s your best pickup line?” with over 155K views.
